3D printing refers to a variety of processes where the material is added layer by layer in a variety of materials ranging from plastics to metals. 3D printing can be used to make aesthetic models or functional components. Processes & Materials

FDM is synonymous with 3d printing. In FDM raw material in the form of wires/filaments is melted through a heated nozzle and deposited layer by layer to form any shape. FDM is the cheapest of all 3D printing processes because of its simplicity. A variety of materials like ABS, PLA, PETG, Nylon, PC are typically used as raw materials in FDM. FDM is often used to make simple prototypes in low cost.

Materials

ABS is a very moldable material which makes it most suitable for a lot of applications ranging from toys to automobiles. It is widely used in 3D printing due to its light weight, moldability and low cost.
PLA is a bio-degradable material that is typically used for LEGO, electronic housings, medical devices and automobile parts. PLA has good strength properties suitable for prototyping various parts.
TPU is a flexible, abrasion resistant material used for both consumer products and industrial use. They are extensively used in automobile manufacturing for parts like flexible tubes etc.
HIPS is very similar to ABS, in fact, it’s actually stronger. HIPS is easily painted, machineable, and works with a large number of adhesives. It’s also food-safe, non-toxic, fully recyclable, and non-hygroscopic, meaning it won’t degrade in humid environments.
SLA is typically used when a great surface finish and dimensional accuracy in the order of microns is necessary. The raw material is often a liquid resin which polymerizes when laser or light is incident on it. Very fine and intricate features of a design can be thoroughly replicated using SLA. A variety of materials like ABS, Polycarbonate, Clear plastic, Dental resins, and Bio-compatible materials are also possible in the SLA process.

Materials

ABS resins produce high stiffness, high resolution prints with a smooth injection molding-like finish. Their low-cost makes them ideal for prototyping applications. The color of the resin affects its properties. For example, grey resin is better suited for parts with fine details and white resin for parts that require a very smooth surface.
Rubber-like resin allows engineers to simulate rubber parts that are soft to the touch. It can also be used to add ergonomic features to multi-material assemblies, like packagings, stamps, wearable prototyping, handles, overmolds and grips.
The zDental Model Sand resin offers a balance between rigidity and tensile strength, high geometrical precision and a quality surface finish. Its surface finish is smooth, matt and with a color similar to plaster, which facilitates the clear visualization of the model during production. Thanks to all this and its low cost, the zDental Model Sand is one of the preferred dental resins of the producers of high precision dental models.
SLS is a process that can produce strong and accurate functional parts by sintering the powder into solid parts layer by layer usually with high powered laser beams. Nylon is the most common material used for the SLS process. The finished parts usually have a rough outer texture. Flexible parts can also be made out of SLS. Nylon parts are known for their strength. Because of the homogeneity of the process, the parts are reliable and can be used as functional parts. The process is relatively inexpensive compared to SLA.

Materials

SLS parts made out of nylon PA-12 2200 are often utilized for end uses as functional parts. This is due to their excellent long term constant behavior, high strength, and stiffness. They are bio-compatible to a certain extent. They are food safe too.
MJF is a process that can produce multi-colored or multi-textured parts. MJF parts are stronger and more homogenous than SLS parts. Processing time is also less in MJF compared to SLS. In Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) an array of inkjet nozzles dispense fusing and detailing agents selectively on a bed of nylon powder, which is then fused by heating elements into a solid layer. Using different detailing agents multi-colored or different textured parts can be made.

Materials

Nylon is tough and partially flexible. It has high impact resistance too. It is an ideal choice for printing durable parts. It has good heat resistance too.

Finishes

Sanding

3D printed parts often tend to have layer marks .Some 3D printing processes use support materials too which can also leave marks to the surface of printed parts. These marks can be smoothed out using various grades of sand paper while maintaining the dimensional accuracy to a good extent.

Vapour finish

Some materials like ABS react with acetone vapours. When they react with acetone it causes the surface of the part to smoothen with a glossy finish.

Painting

Post processed 3D prints can be painted to any choice of colour after priming and puttying rendering the finished parts an impeccable automotive grade finishes.

Lacquering

Lacquering can be used on painted 3D printed parts to impart matte or glossy finish as desired. Additionally when applied on clear plastic parts it gives the parts near transparency (90%).

Dyeing

Dyeing can be used for SLS nylon parts to impart colours to the finished parts. The natural colour of the parts is white.

Sand Blasting

Sand Blasting is used on SLS and MJF parts to give them a smooth finish after printing is done. The output parts of these processes generally have a rough surface finish. Sand Blacsting can help smooth their surfaces to a good extent.
